Johns Hopkins University Clinical Social Worker in Baltimore, Maryland

Dr. Holly Wilcox, based at Johns Hopkins University, is currently recruiting a full-time Clinical Social Worker for a study funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The study will compare the effectiveness of two relatively brief and scalable evidence-based interventions: the Safety Planning Intervention with follow-up contacts (SPI+), a suicide-specific intervention that helps people prevent suicidal crises from escalating, and Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents Ultra Short Crisis Intervention (IPT-A SCI), a psychotherapeutic crisis intervention treatment for suicidal adolescents that teaches youth skills to prevent suicidal crises and addresses interpersonal problems that lead to suicidal crises. The results will inform the future standard of care for youth at risk for suicide presenting in the emergency department.

Lastly, this position will work closely with other study staff and the principal investigator(s) with regards to study management, preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation, reporting to PCORI, and other administrative tasks.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the recruitment of patients for research studies.

  • Obtaining consent and assent from patients and families for research participation.

  • Conducting baseline assessments REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) for patients enrolled in research studies.

  • Participating in the randomization of patients in the emergency department for research purposes.

  • Collect baseline assessments as needed to support research protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting social work assessments and identify patient problems and goals.

  • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to optimize patient outcomes.

  • Making referrals to outside agencies and coordinate continuity of care.

  • Providing coverage during absences, vacancies, and on-call as needed.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, necessary for effective interaction with hospital staff, healthcare professionals, patients, and families.

  • Proficiency in providing social work services in a mental health/healthcare setting.

  • Analytical ability to assess patient needs, develop treatment plans, and deliver effective interventions.

  • Ability to identify organizational obstacles and make recommendations to improve patient care.

  • Strong knowledge of biopsychosocial and cultural elements of clinical social work practice.

  • Familiarity with procedures, systems, and organizational objectives used within social work.

  • Effective knowledge of community resources.

  • Understanding of the current healthcare environment.

  • Ability to gather relevant data to synthesize and summarize information for patient care judgments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work is required.

  • Knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, or dialectical behavioral techniques helpful.

  • Licensed to practice in the State of Maryland.

  • Additional supervision and training post-licensure preferred.

  • Two year's experience in the field of clinical social work required; three or more preferred.

  • Experience with college and/or graduate and professional students and young adult population preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $47,500 - $83,300 Annually ($50,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
