Position Summary

We are seeking a Controls Technician (Associate Repair and Maintenance Engineer) professional like you to join our amazing Des Moines, IA Manufacturing plant.

Since 1945, the Bridgestone Des Moines plant has produced agricultural, construction, forestry and off-the-road tires. With more than 70 years of history in the community, many of the 1,300 teammates in Des Moines are second- or even third-generation teammates.

As a Controls Technician, you will be expected to provide on-call support to the production floor, assisting in troubleshooting and resolving down machines. Controls Technicians also have the opportunity to complete controls-related project work, including electrical drawings, PLC programming, HMI design and configuration, VFD and servo configuration, and more.

Responsibilities

In this role, your primary responsibilities will include:

Plant Operations Support

  • Troubleshoots & returns equipment back into production.

  • Works closely with on shift maintenance staff.

  • Documents troubleshooting and root cause analysis in daily turnover report.

  • Updates Firmware in all Control Devises (PLCs, Drives, HMIs, etc.)

  • Rolls out identified safety interlock improvements.

  • Quality improvements on production floor equipment

  • Assists Process Engineering with pilot trials.

  • Manages battery replacement and program backup for all the machines on the production floor.

  • Supports area engineers with improvement ideas to reduce machine downtime.

  • Must be able to work an 8hr Mon-Fri shift; schedule rotates between shifts each quarter.

Engineering design, development, installation, and support

Technical Expertise/Knowledge

  • Allen Bradley software - Studio/RSLogix 5000, FactoryTalk View Studio, RSLinx Classic/OEM, AssetCentre, CCW.

  • Ladder Logic, Safety PLC programming, and HMI design.

  • Rockwell Automation products including motion and safety.

  • AutoCAD Electrical, Vault and other Autodesk suite software.

  • Fanuc robotics software and operation.

  • Works on repair and maintenance engineering problems of limited scope and contributes on projects or processes while receiving detailed instructions from higher level professionals.

  • Contributes to planning of and coordination of maintenance engineering work, including review of mechanical and electrical engineering specifications.

  • Supports continuous improvement/automation activities.

Project Management

  • Assists Mechanical & Electrical Engineering on capital or improvement projects & tire trials.

  • Participates in the installation and commissioning of new equipment.

  • Handles multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Updates documentation such as Training documents, Program backup, Network diagrams, Electrical drawings, etc.

Consulting and Communications

  • Liaises with production staff to coordinate repair work, statutory safety inspections, and startup of new plant equipment in coordination with production schedules.

  • Creates shift reports to communicate issues experienced during the assigned production shift.

  • Utilizes skills working with area technicians for determination and implementation of A-Rank maintenance downtime countermeasures.

  • Assists in identification of skills gaps associated with area technicians in consultation with shift Maintenance team leader.

Maintenance of Expertise

  • Attends training events, technical seminars, and reads technical publications to keep abreast of the latest technology.

  • Provides training to maintenance and plant staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Experience in Maintenance within a heavy manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge in PLCs, drives, servos, mechanical systems, and fluid power.

  • Experience in troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree; or equivalent work experience.

  • Associate degree in technical or engineering field or equivalent experience.

  • Must be able to work on a rotating 8-hour shift.
