Job Description

  • Routine Maintenance and Repair (M&R) of NREL gloveboxes across all four of NREL technology directorates:

  • Change HEPA filters, clean and replace solvent media in traps, replace gloves, etc.

  • Regenerate glovebox purifiers and change catalyst as needed.

  • Maintain, calibrate, clean and repair oxygen and water vapor sensors.

  • Perform leak testing to guide repairs.

  • Maintain and repair vacuum pumps.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues that may arise during routine maintenance or unexpected problems with glovebox systems.

  • Coordinate with users to schedule M&R activities

  • Other duties:

  • Participate in plan of the week meeting with the MCCS Engineering and Informatics group to coordinate activities with the rest of the group.

  • Perform M&R, equipment modifications, and design-build activities on non-glovebox equipment as schedule allows.

  • Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to NREL Lab Level Procedure (600-28) on glovebox safety standards.

  • Ensure compliance with work planning and control (WPC) authorizations and actively participate in or assist with safety protocols.

  • Maintain accurate records of activities, adhering to NREL standards.

  • Provide or assist with training on glovebox usage and maintenance for authorized personnel.

  • Ensure best glovebox practices are implemented across the NREL campus.

Basic Qualifications

This position may be filled at Level III or Level II

For Level III

High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Full knowledge of specialized focused support functions. Complete acquaintance with and understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the supported activities, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Proficient in research techniques and practices. Solid communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.

For Level II

High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Substantial acquaintance with and understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Intermediate to advanced skills in research techniques and practices. Good written, verbal, team, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

For Level II

  • Mechancial aptitude and the ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including excellent manual dexterity for intricate tasks associated with glovebox maintenance and repair as well as the capability to wear and work in the requisite personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.

  • Disposition to follow established procedures and effectively execute routine and recurring tasks associated with glovebox maintenance.

  • Willingness to follow established protocols and procedures for both scheduled maintenance and unforeseen repairs.

For Level III, all of the above plus:

  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in performing preventative maintenance and repair of gloveboxes utilized for chemistry and biological processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that may arise during routine maintenance or unexpected problems with glovebox systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Research Technician II – Build

  • Ability to coordinate with research staff to schedule M&R activities.

  • Understanding of glovebox types (Dry box vs Purifier) and their respective applications.

  • Strong documentation skills to maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and any modifications made to glovebox systems.

  • Strong commitment to safety protocols and practices in a laboratory setting

Research Technician III – Build: All of the above, plus

  • Experience working with electrical systems.

  • Experience working with pressure/compressed gas systems.

  • Previous experience working with glovebox systems in a national laboratory or similar environment.

  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of vacuum pumps.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Research Technician III / Annual Salary Range: $55,400 - $91,400

Job Profile: Research Technician II / Annual Salary Range: $49,100 - $78,600

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
