Position Summary

Position is responsible for operating various medium and light equipment required in forestry management.

Position Responsibilities

Prunes trees according to accepted arboricultural standards and in an efficient manner to meet schedules. Communicates climbing and pruning plans to groundsworker before leaving the ground. Climbs trees using recognized techniques and approved devices. Performs aerial rescues during drills and emergency situations. Safety conscious at all times; considering safety for self, employees, visitors, animals and structures. Performs maintenance activities, such as complete removals, on trees with existing mechanical devices. Removes, under Crew Leaders supervision, trees in a safe manner, following accepted arboricultural practices. Understands how to safely lower limbs and sections over sensitive areas. Operates, and maintains brush chippers and chain saws on a daily basis. Prepares site for tree planting by digging holes, making soil amendments, etc. Plants trees using accepted arboricultural practices. Identifies the scientific and common names of the tree collection within our Parks system. Responsible for all tools and equipment issued or assigned.

Qualifications

Must have High school education or equivalent with two (2) years experience. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Knowledgeable of cultural and maintenance requirement of tree species (special pruning needs, tendency of species toward weak crotches or limbs, fruiting patterns, etc.) Ability to lift, carry and maneuver 50 lbs. and greater on a routine basis over uneven terrain. Ability to drive and operate large vehicles, including bucket and crane trucks. Ability to work overtime as needed or requested by supervisor. Ability to pull, drag and manipulate tree logs, limbs, branches and other debris. Experience and knowledge of equipment use, operation, care, safety devices, maintenance and limitations for all equipment utilized with the forestry operation. Repetitive performance of coordination and flexibility actions such as bending, crawling, and kneeling. Ability to maintain high mental and visual focus during forestry operations. Ability to remain flexible and adaptable to accommodate changing work requirements, workload or working conditions. A valid Class A CDL Driver’s License is preferred, Class B license required.
