Bus Driver

The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a bus. This is manual work of average difficulty requiring skill in the operation of a large automotive vehicle. The operator is responsible for the safety and conduct of passengers. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed to the operator in carrying out the details of the work. The incumbent does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

-Operates a bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions.
-Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting a trip. -Reports any operational/mechanical defect to immediate supervisor. -Instructs or informs passengers and/or children about safety practices when entering or leaving the bus. -Maintains orderly conduct of passengers and/or children on bus. -Maintains records of mileage, routes, time and incidents. -Prepares and maintains maps of routes and pick up points. -May be required to operate other similar vehicles. -May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle. -Keeps the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and neat. -Collects bus fares and organizes deposit to transportation office, ensuring funds balance.

Applicant must have:

-Good knowledge of driving safety practices, traffic laws & regulations. -Ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions. -Ability to make minor repairs to vehicle. -Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions. -Ability to get along with passengers and/or children and command their respect. -Mechanical aptitude. -Mental Alertness. -Dependability.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidate MUST possess a valid New York State Commercial Drivers License (CDL-A, CDL-B or CDL-C), with Passenger ("P") endorsement with a driving record acceptable to the employer's insurance carrier at the time of application and throughout employment.

*Applications will be accepted for a Bus Driver Trainee with at least a CDL permit and a clean drivers license.
