Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators, 152 miles of intercepting sewers, 96 pumping systems, 3 CSO storage facilities, and 3 aeration facilities.

The BWT is responsible for maintaining and improving harbor-wide water quality through efficient and reliable operation of the City’s wastewater treatment plants and its wastewater collection system. The selected candidates will assist with sampling, reporting, collecting, analyzing, investigating and presenting data related to the harbor survey. Industrial Pollution candidates will conduct sampling and develop mass balances for industrial inputs and their impacts on the Port Richmond WRRF. Compliance Monitoring Intern will conduct sample, dye testing at outfalls and analyze data and draft reports. Process Research & Support interns will assist with creating and maintaining an electronic library of WRRF process model’s simulations; assist section with field sampling campaigns and study the disinfection of the Biological Nitrogen Removal (BNR) effluent, which will require monitoring, sampling and troubleshooting of the systems in the field. Laboratory candidates will focus on the microbial source tracking program and method development to support analytical methods for the program.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
