Summary All hourly jobs are considered as open for bid on a continuous basis. Any BPA employee on a competitive career or career-conditional appointment may, at any time, submit an application for permanent promotions, reassignments, or change of duty stations. In order to assure all interested employees are considered, candidates are solicited annually through a Continuous Vacancy Announcement - Hourly Jobs (Bid List) identifying those jobs and duty locations, for which they wish to be considered. Responsibilities As a Plumber & Pipefitter, you will: Install and maintain such equipment as all types of deep well and shallow well pumps; chlorinators and various types of heating equipment, such as steam, hot water, or oil; septic tanks and drain fields, including bell and spigot cast iron and open joint clay or concrete pipe; all types of water lines such as steel, cast iron, plastic, copper and transite; all types of building plumbing fixtures, fittings, and piping; oil lines and headers for transformers and Oil Circuit Breaker installations from either plastic or steel pipe. Use and maintain a variety of hand tools common to the trade and such machine tools as pipe benders and threading machines. Occasionally uses oxyacetylene torch for cutting, brazing, or welding From written or oral instructions, blueprints, or sketches, plans work and selects methods, materials and machines appropriate for the project. Requirements Conditions of Employment Position is subject to initial pre-employment Drug Testing and random drug testing thereafter. This position requires a pre-employment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position. After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards. Apprentices in the last year of the program are encouraged to submit an application to indicate duty locations for which they want to be considered for permanent placement. Become familiar with and follow the safety practices of the BPA Accident Prevention Manual. Travel to field sites. Possess within one year of appointment, and maintain continuously thereafter, a First Aid Card. Prior to working in an energized substation, obtain, and maintain continuously thereafter, a non-electrical worker's permit. Subject to call for emergency work outside normal hours. Possess a valid state driver's license. Possess a U.S. Motor Vehicle Operator Authorization or obtain within 30 days after the requirement is established. Traffic citations indicating poor driving habits may disqualify applicants. Be certified to use bucket trucks, man lifts, and fork lifts. Operate motor vehicles including sedans, pick-up trucks, flatbed or van-type trucks. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed at the General Shops at the Ross Complex, or in the shop at The Dalles. Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors anywhere in the BPA system, according to the type of work being performed. Work may be required at considerable height and on precarious footing during inclement weather. Hazards include working around energized, high voltage electrical equipment; climbing on ladders or scaffolding at heights up to 80 feet; working in trenches; working around machinery with moving parts; exposure to grease, dirt, oil; and danger of cuts and bruises from tools and materials. Proper respiratory and safety equipment shall be worn in accordance with OSHA standards when hazardous substances are being handled (solvent fumes, oil, acid, etc.). The work environment will occasionally include high noise levels or exposure to hazardous substances (i.e., mercury, acids, solvents, PCB's, etc.) that could, if precautions are not followed, pose a health risk. Emergencies, critical system conditions, or outage limitations may require that work be performed under serious time pressures. System priorities may require extended periods of overtime including working weekends. Considerable travel may be involved.
